TMS TO DISTRIBUTE VARIETY'S 100TH ANNIVERSARY LIST OF TOP ENTERTAINERS OF THE CENTURYCHICAGO, October 14, 2005 Tribune Media Services (TMS) today announced plans to distribute to newspapers in the United States and abroad a list compiled by Variety of the top 100 entertainment icons of the century. Named the top entertainers of the past 100 years were The Beatles. Rounding out the Top Ten, in alphabetical order, are Louis Armstrong, Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse and Elvis Presley. Variety, the newspaper of record for the entertainment industry, prepared the top-100 list and related stories for use in its centennial issue, for sale on newsstands October 17. Founded in 1905, Variety is currently marking its 100th anniversary with a series of special events and special publications. TMS, the content-licensing unit of Tribune Company, syndicates Variety content through the Variety Entertainment News Service, a daily information service launched by the two companies on October 1. TMS will make the Variety list and companion articles available for use in newspapers on October 18, and it will waive normal licensing fees. Variety's top editors, reporters and critics selected the 100 from all areas of the entertainment industry-film, television, music, theater and radio. The Variety team spent nine months compiling the list with input from members of the global entertainment community. "While entertainment mediums have changed through the past 100 years, Variety is the only publication whose permanence and commitment to covering the world of show business has remained reliable and steadfast," said Charles C. Koones, president and publisher of Variety. "Variety is, in itself, an American icon." "We're pleased to share this fascinating information with newspapers throughout the world," said David D. Williams, president and CEO of TMS. "It's not often such an authoritative source as Variety turns its attention to ranking the top movers and shakers in the world of entertainment. Newspaper readers of all ages will enjoy reviewing this list, and making their own judgments about the selections." The complete list of 100 names and the related articles will be posted on Tuesday, October 18 at http://variety.tmsfeatures.com, the website of the Variety Entertainment News Service.
