Variety and TMS to Launch Worldwide Entertainment News ServiceChicago, IL, August 29, 2005 Variety, the entertainment-industry publication of record, and Tribune Media Services (TMS), the content-licensing unit of Tribune Company, today announced plans to introduce a daily news service for use by newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. The Variety Entertainment News Service will provide editors with access to a wide range of breaking-news stories and analyses; feature articles; newsmaker profiles; opinion columns; movie, TV, music and theater reviews; box office reports; photographs and more. Newspapers may publish the Variety material in both their print and online editions. "We believe that new readers of Variety content will come to enjoy a daily insider's view into the world of entertainment," said Charlie Koones, president and publisher of the Variety Group. "With the world's largest entertainment news-gathering staff, Variety is the first source for industry professionals. Our new partnership with Tribune Media Services makes this 'insider' information available to a whole new audience." The daily service, scheduled to be launched on September 26, 2005, will draw editorial content from Daily Variety, Weekly Variety, Variety.com and VLife, a bimonthly magazine about the lifestyles of the stars and other high-profile people throughout the entertainment industry. The service also will supply content from the weekly trade publication Video Business. Variety and Video Business are units of Reed Business Information (RBI), a publisher of more than 100 trade titles and other publications. "We're thrilled to be in this exciting new relationship with Variety," said David D. Williams, president and CEO of TMS. "This new initiative represents a marriage of the most authoritative source of entertainment-industry news and a content-licensing agency with global reach. We look forward to making the unique content from this respected media organization available to newspapers throughout the world." Each day, clients of the Variety Entertainment News Service will have print and online rights to dozens of stories produced by the largest news-gathering staff in the industry. Included will be coverage of film festivals and other entertainment-related developments in 84 countries. A hallmark of the service will be its daily coverage of breaking news in the major entertainment capitals of the world-Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Rome. Also available will be commentaries by Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart and Variety TV columnist Brian Lowry. "For decades, Variety has been the first and last word on developments in the world of entertainment," said Williams. "But this is the first time in its 100-year history this premier media company has made its content available to such a broad and diverse audience of consumers." Founded in 1905, Variety is currently marking its 100th anniversary with a series of special events and special publications. About The Variety Group/Reed Business Information (RBI)
